Most Dangerous Roads and Highways in Louisiana

Posted by Liz Delsa | Jul 08, 2024 | 0 Comments

If you spend any time at all driving in Louisiana, you know we have some dangerous roads. In a recent study, Louisiana ranked 7th in the nation for the most dangerous roads. This is due to a multitude of factors, including road conditions, traffic volume, and accident rates.

Statistically, Interstate 10 (I-10) is the most dangerous. It sees more traffic than any other road in Louisiana, and there is a large volume of heavy trucks that use I-10 every day. Other dangerous roads include the following:

· Interstate 12 (I-12)

· US-190

· US-61

· US-165

The State highways in Louisiana are statistically the most dangerous. While there are many dangerous roads in Louisiana, the point that most people miss, however, is that the most dangerous road in Louisiana at any given time to you is always the one you're driving on and at risk of being in a crash.

Factors that Contribute to Crashes

What's less important than which road you're on is how you're driving and how others around you are driving. Of those two, it's easiest to control how you're driving. Here are some things you can do to help you make it to your destination safely:

1. Pay attention to the road. Put your mobile phone away, or if you're using it for navigation, mute all incoming notifications so you're not

tempted to look at emails or texts while you're driving. Distracted driving is one of the biggest causes of vehicle crashes, and it's been estimated that your risk of a crash doubles if your eyes leave the road for more than 2 seconds.

2. Keep your speed down. Speeding and driving too fast for conditions are also a major cause of traffic crashes. Think about it – racing from one stop light to another just to sit and wait for that red light to change isn't saving you much time, and you're burning more gas in addition to increasing your risk of a crash.

3. Don't drive while impaired. This goes for more than drunk or drugged driving; it also applies when you're tired. Any time you're not able to bring your full attention to the task of driving your vehicle, you significantly increase the likelihood that you'll crash.
